Designed by local brothers Wesley & Joel Kelder of Kelder Architects, the Mid-Century Modern house sits amongst a quiet leafy street in Bardon. The minimalist front elevation gives way to a large five bedroom,517m2 family home to the rear.
The front entrance is comprised of blackbutt shiplap cladding on one side, and locally sourced sandstone on the other. Both extend beyond the door (from outside to in) and welcomes family and friends.
The home is equipped with state-of-the-art automation including Control 4, CCTV, security, server racks, and centralised pool management. These take care of the mundane everyday tasks including pool cleaning, blind control (raising and lowering), ducted air-conditioning and external door operation (including garage door). A 12.5kw solar power system assists with day to day running costs of the household.
Upstairs, all 5 bedrooms open onto a large wrap around deck complete with custom made aluminium balustrade (made in house) and 130mm blackbutt decking. The study and library are served by a built-in kitchenette with coffee machine and fridge.
Externally, gardens and landscaping designed by Clegg Designs are true to the “Palm Springs” inspiration. Separate zones and levels, sympathetic to the block’s original contours, include an olive grove, citrus planting, vegetable gardens, and lawns, along with more formal planting areas. The use of timber and steel structures built in house complete the home’s mid-century modern feel.
Seamless thresholds between internal and external living areas allows guests to utilise both areas simultaneously.
The fully appointed kitchen, butler’s pantry and laundry include 2pac cabinetry, reconstituted stone benchtops, dual pyrolytic Siemens ovens, multiple sinks and mixers, and fully integrated dishwasher. Operable custom timber Ventwood Screens petition areas within the kitchen and living zones without closing the spaces off completely.
The orientation of the island bench serves as a focal point, allowing for supervision of family activities while using the multi zoned Siemens gas cooktop and flush set (in ceiling) Falmec rangehood. Visitors at the island bench overlook the home’s internal courtyard boarded by a 15m lap pool, fully tiled children’s pool (both solar heated) and self-contained pool house.
